Kim Clauson_ CP 8

On Friday, November 30, 2012, I had the privilege to attend coffee hour and see my good friends Pursi and Spandan, from Nepal; Edgar, from Venezuela; Gozde, from Turkey; Raja, from India; and Shirley, from China.  This was a great encounter with many diverse people.  Our conversations wandered from topic to topic, though many people were interested in finding out how many exams people were taking, what everyone’s plans were for the holidays, and many people were curious about what happens on Christmas Day and Christmas Night for a typical American family.  I felt a revived sense of holiday celebration based on everyone else’s excitement.
After tea time, I was invited to Bullwinkle’s to listen to music amongst many of my new international friends.  It was really interesting to see English language learners in this very social environment.  I thought that Edgar’s Conversational English was certainly a little scrambled around all the people and on the effects of alcohol.  It was neat experience to listen to the cover music because I could give an opportunity to give context behind many of the classic cover songs including “Wagon Wheel” by the Grateful Dead.  I danced to the music the way I have always danced, but I attempted to learn an Indian and Nepalese dance style.  This is certainly a memory that will be with me for a long time!
