On
Tuesday at 1 I met with Jung again at Strozier. I got there ten minutes early
and once again I found her there working in her workbook, which is always nice
to see. I asked her if she got a chance to make flash cards and she admitted
she hadn’t only made around thirty. I said it was fine
considering I’d seen her only 24 hours before.
We
went over the last section of her book which was describing trends and patterns
in data that was presented in various kinds of graphs, pie, bar, etc. I asked
her to do one and off the bat she misread the instructions and was describing
the bars, the shadings, and what the symbols meant. I pointed out that it said
to describe as if both people are looking at the graphs and she needs to be
focus on the trends in data and ignore the actual graph. This was tough at
first for she had put so much effort into describing the whole graph. After the
second one I wrote down about 8 terms and vocabulary that would help her link
her descriptions together. I had her copy them down once, and then write each
one in a sentence describing an imaginary graph. When she was done and went
back to verbally describing trends, even though she only used 3 or 4 of the
terms, it helped her orations flow well and sound more natural.
This
would be our last tutoring session as her test would be on Thursday so we parted
ways. I left her with this advice: To speak English more in her household. She admitted
they tried and stopped because of its difficulty but I suggested perhaps making
one day a week where they wake up and go to sleep and only speak English all
day. To make flashcards for the “L”s and “R”s and that being better at that
before her exam could be vital. And finally, to try and watch every Pixar movie
with her son. Reason being, Finding Nemo,
Up, and Toy Story 3 are some of my favorite movies and I truly believe that
they’re brilliantly written as well as fantastic representations of American
culture.
