Nickie CP5
On 11/8/12 I met my conversation partner Amr at the Piteria on Tennessee. This visit, we didn't share food but we talked about what we were eating to each other. I laughed and told Amr I had never seen anyone eat chicken wings with a fork and a knife. He assured me it wasn't an easy skill to acquire. After my falafel, I was hoping to share some baklava with Amr, but luckily before sharing the first bite, told me of his allergy to nuts. He assured me he didn't have big sweet tooth. I praised him on the use of that common phrase. Our light hearted conversation traveled down the path of my previous marriage and he told me I had many stories. I asked him to share one of his stories, and he claimed not to have any. All he has done in life is study and try to become a good man for his family. This "story-less" man across from me at the table then continued with the story of his life situation and how he would marry a woman not of his choosing, but his mother's. He talked of how he is homesick and doesn't want to study in America. He told me of his poetic language and the troubles he will have translating from English to Arabic when he goes home to teach. After looking down at our watches during a pause, we both realized that our normally quiet conversation time had surpassed two hours, just talking about life. Speaking of our differences in culture and religion brought up many questions. He said he admired Americans for setting the opinions of others aside when needing to make a logical decision, even if it's against our own religion. He seems to have many burdens on his shoulders for a man so young. Even if he doesn't want to study in America, maybe it'll give him a break to breathe.
