Preston Baker CO 2
My second classroom observation was with Ah Young Kim on November
12 in her reading class. The class began with a short review; the students were
asked about the previous class assignment.
At that point I was ask to introduce myself, I wasn't sure of the level
of the students so I gave short self-introduction. After that was done it was time for a
vocabulary quiz. The list of vocabulary
was not very long, but the quiz was different in format than I was used to, it
was not “a give the translation of this word” style quiz (which in hindsight
could not work in a class room with speakers of so many different languages). The students were given sentences with parts
blanked out and they had to place the correct word in the blank. Each word had
several sentences it could be placed into; the key was to understand the word
in context. After the quiz we read the
story the words had been taken form. Ah Young Kim has a pleasant, even reading
voice. The story was “The Ant and
Grasshopper” she choose it hoping that many students would be familiar with it.
However after she ask the class if they knew the story not many hands went up.
Even so the reading exercise and comprehension questions went well.
