Tyler TP2

We all know how fun children can be. The experience that I had this weekend reminded me. Anna and Yoanna are great. Anna is four and her sister is three. Initially I was assigned to the three year old, but I figured since her sister was also there, Yoanna, the younger one would want her sister there with her, so I welcomed Anna to stay. Before I meet them I had asked the librarian to help me pick out some Koren to English readers, she was a great help. I left her with books on letter sounds, picture dictionaries, and short stories. When I got to the girls, they were not interested. But everything else was. From the rocking chairs, to the play tables that happened to be adorned with magnets, frogs, sand, wormy things. My competition was fierce. Instead of forcing them to sit and pay attention to me, I sat and played with them. I would count the worms body parts, explain why the magnets stuck to things, test their knowledge of colors, numbers, and animals. But I didn't want to disappoint the parents, I knew they had their expectations. So to encourage focus, I would sit on the ground, start reading a book, and allow my change in voices to get their attention. Once I got them hooked, I would have them count out the objects that were on the page, point to specific colors and track the main character. I am looking forward to making their experience a lot better! I am grateful for their parents patience.

  1. I absolutely love talking in funny voices to children! The author Mo Williams has incredible books that keeps kids fully engaged. Shel Silverstein poems are also fun to read/perform... ;)
