Nickie CO1

On Tuesday, 11/13/12, I observed Calyn Stringer's Reading class. What a fun teacher! She is full of energy with a good sense of humor.  Each student was greeted by name with questions on how their three day weekend was.  Class was quite organized. Reading logs for the previous week were collected at the beginning of class. They reviewed Fridays lesson to build on today. She used the whiteboard to show the class they would focus on affixes today, and be quizzed tomorrow. After a great explanation of the lesson on affixes using the whiteboard, the book, and real life examples from students, the class participated in small group activities. Student participation was high. The classroom energy was friendly and relaxed, yet still on task. During group work, Calyn was available to help any group if they were stuck.  The entire class participated when reviewing the group activity answers. A couple short YouTube clips on affixes were shared and reviewed in class. After the clips, another short group activity with definitions took place. The entire class was welcome to participate during the review of the activity. No responses were ignored, students were all engaged and encouraged to participate.

Throughout classroom communication, Calyn was kind with students' errors in speech and grammar.  If something was spoken in an incorrect way, she would repeat back to the student as a question. If the student didn't pick up on how to correct themselves, she guided them to the proper way.
