I was
excited and nervous about my second tutoring appointment with Manal on
Wednesday, November 14, 2012. I found it
slightly more difficult to find extremely engaging lessons for someone who was
at such a beginning level. We continued
to follow the progression of lessons that were in the CIES textbook and I
supplemented the material whenever possible.
I came up with extra practice by using the Arabic/English picture
dictionary. The first day that I tutored
Manal, we discussed indefinite and definite articles with food. We continued our food conversations by
learning about basic contractions. We
used the contractions to discuss preferences with food. We found a page about meat and cheese and
used that for our practice after we reviewed how to say all the words on the
page. I started by asking, “What is
this?” Manal would respond using our
modeled structure, “It’s a chicken.”
Then I would ask, “Do you eat chicken?”
She would respond with, “No, I don’t eat chicken” if she didn't eat the
food that we were discussing. I tried
to use the book for examples and to also use the objects that I could see
within her house. I am trying
desperately to provide the basic framework for sentence structures and expose
her to vocabulary that will be most pertinent to her life.
Great work on basic sentence structure. Trust me, this is engaging enough at this level!
