I met
with my newest tutoring partner, Mii, who is the mother of Woo-Joo on Tuesday, November
13, 2012. Mii was very worried about the
state of her English so I decided to help her as much as possible. I felt like she was dealing with issues because
she was overly concerned with accuracy, but could handle fluidity within a
conversation. She told me that she was
always shy and reserved in class, but can no longer get away with being as introverted. Mii wasn’t impressed with her language progression,
and decided that it had to do with her previous attempts to be reserved. Now, she tried to speak quickly and suffered
from numerous errors. Mii felt horrible
every time that she made a mistake. I
used this opportunity to discuss “beautiful mistakes.” I asked how I could help her on this tutoring
session and she asked me if I could help her find the main ideas within
paragraphs. Mii said that it took her a
long time to find the main ideas and this often frustrated her. We worked together and I showed her
case-by-case, the clues that helped me to find the main idea, supporting ideas,
and the evidence that supported them. Her
article was about Nanotechnology and I could tell that this was an interest of
hers. After we completed the assignment,
we made a brief web outline using the main and supporting ideas. We decided that finding Ted Talks about
Nanotechnology could provide much needed listening and reading practice for her
High Intermediate to Advanced English level.
I am excited to be able to help both Woo-Joo and Mii and I think that I
will learn a lot about Asian and South Korean cultures through our tutoring
sessions!
I'm glad you were able to take the time to discuss "beautiful mistakes" with her. Slowing down and keeping this simple is useful in all skill focused activities.
