Jordan TP1
On Tuesday the 6th of November I met with John Seo, a recent immigrant from Korea, at CIES. He works as a research scholar at FSU, and I will be tutoring both of his kids, thanks to Ah-Young Kim! After speaking with John Seo for a few minutes, I agreed to meet his wife and kids at the LeRoy Collins Public Library the following day when they got out of school. They were waiting for me in the foyer, and we immediately headed to the children's books section for some reading practice. June-sung (Jason) is in second grade, and his sister Sally is in fifth grade. Naturally, they each chose books according to their ability: Jason read to me from some books that he had read before, such as "Fly Guy" by Tedd Arnold and other books with excellent illustrations that give clues to helping figure out unfamiliar words from the context of the story. Sally read from the slightly more advanced "Lulu and the Duck in the Park" by Hilary McKay, which had some pictures but only every few pages. We spoke a little bit about what they would like to work on, and I said I would meet them again next week. Before heading home I made sure to check out the local music CD's and borrowed a great jazz album by Etienne Charles, a trumpet player from the FSU jazz program, featuring other great jazz artists such as Marcus Roberts! Thanks local public library, you never steer me wrong.
