Dominic Hoak TP 2

Today I met with my tutoring partner Bill for the second time. We met outside CIES and walked to Strozier. While we were waiting for our study room to open up we took a look at his TOEFL preparation book. As he said last time we mainly focused on the speaking portion of the test. I managed to find a youtube video that gave different topics for students to practice speaking on. The video also used different accents to form the questions so Bill had to decipher the different accents that he wasn't used to at times that gave him a different approach. We started the routine of listening to the question, giving Bill about 15 seconds to prepare, and then we would review. I decided it was a good idea for us to record Bill and then he would attempt to pick out his mistakes. I felt this was very useful because he was acting as his own corrector, and if he didn't catch the mistake I pointed him in the right direction. I asked Bill to attempt to do the same thing at home (listen to the question, record his voice, then correct on paper) and we could review it during our next meeting. I told him to be honest and not worry about making mistakes because we would correct them together and he can learn more. For our next lesson we are going to review his recordings and do practice writing. I think when we do a timed writing session that I will offer to do the same topic, but in Spanish. That way I will be able to experience some of what he is going through also and hopefully it will help him by knowing that we all make mistakes.

  1. What a great idea Dominic! I really like how you showed him how he could practice your lesson independently.
