I met with my tutoring partner
Mubarak AlQattan today at 3 o clock before class. We had known each other from
the other day at Café Shisha but for the first ten to fifteen minutes we just
caught up. I asked him how his classes were today and a meeting he had just attended.
I used this as a transition into discussing specifically what he studied, what
was taught and what his homework was. He showed me an article his teacher gave
him and his objective was to read, summarize, and give his opinion. The article
was about how foreign exchange students often go through their programs, or
college, without many friends. While he was explaining I realized that this
could be a perfect first assignment. While we had mentioned the political
election and the fact that we both liked Obama, I assumed he knew very little
about American politics. I asked him if he was on Twitter and he said yes. I
asked him to follow the publication “The Atlantic” on twitter and pick one
article over the next two days to write about, analyze, and produce his own
opinion about. I chose the Atlantic because the articles are often short,
direct, and very insightful. He said he would do it and we’d meet up on
Thursday to discuss it.
Great idea to use twitter! Posts are short enough and easy to follow. :)
